Sexual Harassment Is a Form of Discrimination
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that sexual harassment on the job is a violation of an employee's rights under the anti-discrimination provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1967. As an employee, you are protected from sexual harassment in all its forms, including:
- Obscene language and dirty jokes
- Unwelcome comments about your gender or sexual orientation
- Inappropriate and unwelcome e-mails, text messages and phone calls
- Inappropriate physical contact, uninvited touching or ogling
- Screen savers, calendars and photos of a sexual or lewd nature
- Unequal facilities and treatment of employees of different sexes

How Does Sexual Harassment Take Place?
Very often, you may not even realize you are being harassed. Your supervisor may ask what you did over the weekend. Innocent enough. A few weeks later he wants to know more details. It feels a little uncomfortable. A month later he sends you an e-mail asking what you plan to do over the coming weekend. None of his business, but he asks again. Weeks later he is talking about you to other employees because you won't respond to his questions or answer his personal e-mails. Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of a workplace controversy and you wonder if you led him on in any way. Before you know it, you're turned down for a pay raise or promotion because you're "not a team player."
Sexual harassment isn't always as obvious as a pinch on the rear. Often, it is a negative attitude toward you simply because you don't play the game.
